Dinner With Friends

Poem

I walk into the restaurant,
my eyes scanning the room
for a table that could seat us all.
I ask the waitress to bring me a
water while I wait.

I see Desire walk through the door.
She’s wild-eyed and unkept.
She orders hot wings and a shot of whiskey.
I’m curious about the colorful secrets
She’s hiding behind her coy smile.

Insanity stumbles in.
She’s drunk. Loud and obnoxious.
One minute she’s laughing, the next, She’s crying.
I have her sit in the corner, and
order her some coffee and bread.

Pain comes in next,
swimming in an oversized hoodie.
She’s pale and gaunt.
The waitress walks over to her,
but she simply waves her on.
She buries her head into her arms
laying over the table.

Next, Logic walks in.
I avoid her concerned gaze.
She’s frantically assessing the situation.
She orders a salad with no dressing,
and pulls a wipe out of her purse
to clean the table.

Everyone begins speaking at once,
and chaos ensues.
There’s arguing, crying, shouting…
I sternly request that everyone settle down.
I was not prepared for such an unruly bunch.

Finally, Love walks in.
She sits down, and smiles,
ordering a tea with honey.
Everyone quiets down, curious what She has to say.
Her eyes are calm and steady.
She nods to me, and reaches across
the table to squeeze my hand.

I know this isn't particularly poem-y, but It was an idea I had as I was falling asleep, and thought it was worth sharing.
