I think you meant to say Asian. Oriental is kind of offensive in a modern context FYI

Why tf are people downvoting you, it is offensive and outdated.

Show me one person that may be offended by that lol

In English Oriental is seen as wildly outdated and offensive

I was wondering. The german duden doesn’t describe it to be offensive. My best guess is that it stems from the dark british colonial history. Germany didnt have that many colonies so there may be cultural difference regarding the social and political implications regarding the meaning of oriental

I don't think OP meant to be offensive at all, but you said "show me one person that may be offended by that lol", dismissing the fact that someone has just told you that it is offensive.

You don't need to guess the etymology of the word just say "oh sure I didn't know that was offensive, my bad" and move on lol

Merriam Webster maybe? Definition of Oriental (Entry 2 of 2) 1 dated, usually offensive, see usage paragraph below : ASIAN especially : one who is a native of east Asia or is of east Asian descent 2 : ORIENTAL RUG 3 : ORIENTAL SHORTHAIR

One thing that struck me when working for a company in Berlin was how much accidental racism was tossed around. They literally added a photo of a totally different Asian guy that didn’t even look like me to the company directory, even after multiple zoom interviews. Every time we ordered Viet, I always got jokingly singled out as the “chopsticks native user”. And these were progressive, tolerant and generally good people, they just had really limited experience with sensitivity around East Asian people because there frankly aren’t that many in Germany, and the ones that grew up there seem to be pretty used to casual remarks and don’t make a point of it.

It’s more or less the same as calling black people negroes, a word that was once considered polite but is now considered dated and offensive. Do you want to defend that too?

Berlin is a really progressive and tolerant place, I love how single mother can raise a family folding T-shirts part time at Uniqlo, but the racial sensitivity seems to be lagging behind the tolerance.

In all fairness though, there’s also a lot of nuance and history to every language. While most people’s English is lightyears ahead of my German, they aren’t native speakers at the end of the day and always deserve a bit of slack.

I don’t try to jump down people’s throats when I hear something offensive, just a gentle hint is usually enough for a quick blush and learning moment and everybody moves on. Take the hint

Lol you pulled up the dictionary definition showing that it is offensive and still got downvoted smh

What does your comment make you feel like? It’s obvious to the rest of us…

It makes me feel like I know the difference between the use of “Oriental” as people and as an adjective for objects (Oriental rug, music, skirt etc), it makes me know I have enough common sense to know OP meant the latter and lastly it makes me know I’m not such a loser that the company won’t put my face on their directory.

Look for shops which sell martial arts clothes. Your pictures look like a "Hakama", like it's used in Aikido for example.

Thanks a lot! Do you know a place you can recommend?

No recommendation, because that's not my sport, and I only found online shops. There seem to be some places in Berlin, but those also offer training and stuff... I wouldn't feel comfortable going there just for the clothes.
