How much computer science knowledge is really needed to be successful?
There is always the debate of cs majors vs non cs majors.
When I look at the cs curriculum of:
-Computer architecture
-Compilers
-Operating Systems
-Data structures and algorithms
-Discrete Math
-Object oriented programming
It seems like the only courses you’ll actually use are data structures and algorithms and object oriented programming.
While it’s nice to know how your code gets compiled into machine code, and nice to know how memory works, and nice to know how a multi core processor works, and nice to know how operating systems thread executions…
Is this knowledge really necessary unless you work for Intel, Oracle or Microsoft?
If not, why is a cs degree valuable when it teaches knowledge we don’t need to become successful programmers?
