Sawdust

Poem

I reside in these forests of pine

Forever green and ever-alive

Breathin' out mint o' mine

Roots in dirt, arms stretched wide

A living statue, with needles I cry

and I, beg for the saw

Cut me down—

this wooden heart bleeds sap, all but dried

I've stood tall, for far too long, same mornings, same skies.

This withered bark, riddled with moss and arthritis.

All my friends have died, met by the axe

and I, beg for the saw

Let sharp teeth of steel—

Rip through dermis plagued by endurances,

Lay me down, on oh so softer grounds

and for this sawdust to kiss the parting breeze,

and for these powdered bits of me to particulate the air

and I, thank the saw

for setting me free,

as the scent of sawdust,

blows by the trees
