I Hope My Daughter Isn't Pretty

Poem

I hope my daughter isn't pretty, until she can tell me what happened.

I hope my daughter isn't pretty, until she knows that where he touched her is inappropriate.

I hope my daughter isn't pretty, until she knows if he follows you, you go to a friend's house if no one is home.

I hope my daughter isn't pretty, until she can tell him not to call her that.

I hope my daughter isn't pretty, until she knows her self worth and sending that photo doesn't prove it.

I hope my daughter isn't pretty, until she knows the 25 year old man is only interested in one thing about her being a teen.

I hope my daughter isn't pretty, until she can tell him that she isn't comfortable doing that.

I hope my daughter isn't pretty, until she knows that his lust for her isn't going to become love.

I hope my daughter isn't pretty, until she knows that the drink he made her isn't safe.

I hope my daughter isn't pretty, until she understands that his violence towards her isn't her fault.

I hope my daughter isn't pretty, until I know she can defend herself against the atrocities on women in this world.

Because I know what it means to grow up pretty.
