Viper vs Astra on Pearl

Discussion

When Pearl came out and I saw bombsite B, I thougt it was a Viper map. The first ranked games came and I was right, everyone playing Viper. Then VALORANT Champions came, the first event with Pearl on map pool, and, from Americas to EMEA and APAC, anyone used a Viper only comp. Most used was: Double controller with Astra and Viper Double controller with Omen and Viper Only Astra At the end, the controllers pick rate was: Astra 83% Viper 50% Omen 17% Brimstone 0%

We can safely say that the pro meta is Astra and Viper, but double controllers comp in ranked is utopia, if you pick Astra, anyone will pick Viper, if you pick Viper, anyone will pick Astra. Then, which controller is better played solo? Viper as has been done in Ranked, or Astra as pro teams did in Champions?

I think this map comes down to preference. Especially in ranked where the agent you play doesn’t matter as much as in pro play. Just play the one you’re more comfortable with. If you really can’t decide pick between the two different bombsites. If you prefer attacking and defending A site more I’d pick astra and vice versa for viper and B site.

In most cases and most maps Viper is not a good solo controller. She excels on defense, but most of the time this is restricted to one side of the map. On attack, her Wall and Smoke are too comital and while you can bring them back up over and over you can’t reliably reposition your smoke to suit your needs as the round plays out.

Astra is much better at making adaptations to the way the enemy is playing, especially during a round. You can easily make a mid round call and put up smokes that will help. With Viper if you place your Wall B site then you’ve just used your best tool for taking A Site as well.

The pro meta for Pearl is still in flux. However, the best teams of the map all run Astra as the main, and in most cases the solo, controller

I use Viper as a solo controller on Pearl. It has it's limitations, but so is solo Astra. The problem with solo Viper is that you will run out of fuel very quickly because you will need both your wall and smoke up to smoke a site properly, but with Astra, you can't fully smoke any of the 2 sites, gaps will be there the enemies can capitalize on.

So... ig try solo Viper? You're going to have to learn lineups though. She shines on a double-controller team though. Or you could be a funny guy and try solo Brim: you've got 3 smokes to smoke the sites with. I have no experience with him though.
