[Spoilers Extended] Valyrians and nuclear magic
Unfortunately I have no sources to point to, because I can't even call this a theory. Just a tinfoily possibility for the nature of Valyrian magical technology, especially given GRRM's penchant for sci-fi and mixing it with fantasy, which is also a large part of what Elden Ring's worldbuilding feels like- to the degree that he was actually involved, which is hard to tell.
It's just always something that has made me wonder- magic is ubiquitous in fantasy, we have fire magic, water magic, earth magic, wind magic, blood magic, space and time magic, psychic magic, magic that manipulates every factor of the natural world but I've never seen a fantasy story look at what would happen in elemental wizards discovered how to manipulate nuclear radiation. This could potentially be Valyria, which connects with the additional tinfoil theory that the Long Night was actually a nuclear winter. Was it caused by space aliens from GRRM's other sci-fi works? No, it was possibly an earlier Doom brought about by forces like the CotF or god only knows what's going on in the far East, like Yi Ti, which have tens of thousands of years of magical understanding that leads to things like a mass decentralized tree consciousness and destroying an entire land bridge with one giant magical spell, the Hammer of the Waters, which created the stepstones.
Dragons could be related to this too. It would be very comic bookish to have them be some kind of lizard thing mutated with carefully harnessed radiation that altered their DNA. They do never stop growing after all, just like a cancerous cell. And Valyria is still uninhabitable because it's an irradiated wasteland that turns everyone who enters into a melted hot dog. There's nothing more hubristic and doomed to fail than arrogantly playing god with nuclear power, which is what Valyria was all about, it would be an excellent signature element for them that encapsulates their entire story.
I'm sure other people have thought of this before, just wondering if perhaps anyone has anything to add or any holes to poke
