Need Advice: Encounters & Adventures

Hello Dm's of Reddit. If anyone reading this is playing Rime of the Frostmaiden in "Doc's place" get lost!

Now I wanted to pick some brains on what you guys think about an encounter I'm going to be having tonight. My players are going to have their sanctuary invaded by Vampire's. Inside of which there are about 9 friendly NPC's and the party of 5.

What I'm going for is a "they are not powerful enough" and must flee style moment. But my problem is what is the best way to handle this. My current ideas:

  • Do the entire fight. Initiative is massive, all NPC's are involved, all pc's are involved and do the fight turn by turn. My issue with this is I prefer to have my players shine during combat. I don't really want to spend most of the combat with my NPC's fighting each other. But this also really sells just how much danger the party is in.

  • Small focus. This is something that works well in my more narrative focused star wars rpg game. Basically the only "fight" mechanically is between the PC's and the NPC's they're fighting. At the top of each round I update the party on what the various NPC's they can see have been doing. It's all smoke and mirrors I'm not rolling for the NPC's or anything just describing what they're up to. Still gets the threat across but this could prove more lethal than I want or one of those fights where "you won but you didn't actually cause you're scripted to loose".

  • Don't bother with the fight at all and just show them all the Vampire tokens on the map. If they choose they want to try and fight proceed with the fight but if they understand the raw danger then allow them to flee without playing out the massive combat.

What do you guys think is the best route here? Games in 4 hours so any advice is apriciated.
