As usual, the anime is tackling the theme for the manga. Maybe Kawaki showing humanity toward Hana have allowed some tragedy to happen (Hence SJ issue hyped up this arc for something that "cannot missed out") which is why he becomes ruthless and showing 0 remorse when killing Boruto.
Plus this shadow power which the masked culprit have shown some similarities to the Nue power that Sumire have displayed so this could trace back to the Ootsutski lore because credited to the guy tweet, Ootsutski means "big bamboo tree" and the princess and the assasin are from the Land of Bamboo.
