Gap year reference

So I know usually teachers do reference and I’m on a gap year right now, I’m going to email my teacher around November/ December for a reference. But I’m just wondering what if they say no? As I’m not a student in their school anymore they have no obligation to do so. What do I do then. I’m just worried they won’t even reply to my email.
