Trading Pieces of Ourselves

Poem

If you have to go away,

let me give you a piece of my cracked body,

let us make an intimate trade.

What do you want?

Press your hands into the grooves,

and take it,

it’s yours.

If I cannot share another fragment of me with you,

take them with you,

wherever you go.

Take my sense of humor,

the way I like to hurt when I laugh,

take my taste in music,

softly sung and deeply felt,

take what you want,

it’s yours.

If this is to be the end,

can I please take with me a piece of you?

Can I linger on your memory,

dancing in the nostalgia,

until either I see you again,

or we die?

How will you remember me when I’m gone?

What will you take?

Please take me with you.

I don’t want to be forgotten.
