Truck didn’t charge overnight?

Using the provided mobile charger, I have the truck scheduled to charge from 12AM-6AM. Plugged up when I got home, app said waiting to charge, projected time done Thursday 3AM etc etc.

Woke up this morning to it now saying it will be done Friday, no charge added.

Is there any way to see why it decided to not charge? No error on the charger, breaker is fine.

Mine didn’t either, checked at 6am and nothin - still said waiting to start charge Weds 10/5 at 11pm. Might be a fluke, app and charging is buggy af but now wondering if FordPass system issues affect scheduled start times?

As someone who consulted the FordPass team when it was being built, that would really really suck.

That would be supremely stupid if the app is the reason, it should be handled vehicle side.

You haven’t met the Ford tech team 😂. Interested to see if other folks weigh in but might just manually hit the charge button before I go to bed and eat that hour or so of off-peak charging.

2
Call_erv_dutyOP•

Bleh.

Will that still charge to my charge limit or is it going to go to 100%?

1
DyngusDan•

I think to 100%

This seems like a dealbreakingly bad problem to have. If the truck isn't charged in the morning, you're screwed. The truck's a brick. If this type of story gets traction in the media, Ford's going to look terrible. They absolutely can't have an electric truck that decides spontaneously to skip charging some nights. If you're paying double the price of a gas truck to get a truck that won't "start" when you're reading to go to work in the morning, that's going to piss off a lot of people.

Edit: There is a crazy amount of delusional apologizing for Ford in this thread... seriously, guys. How is someone who uses 80% of their battery on their daily commute going to shrug this off if they wake up in the morning a third time without a driveable truck? That's the point. You can't have people shelling out this much of a premium for a truck if you can't make it to work the next day. Saying otherwise is just absolutely nuts. Ford never should've green-lit an app that would make a mistake like this. No amount of downvotes will make that acceptable.

I mean you’re not screwed I plugged in with 100 miles last night. If I needed more than that I’d go to the DC fast charger nearby.

No one is paying double the price of a gas truck unless you are comparing models that aren’t similar in spec.

Also, I have had ICE cars blow a seal, batteries die, starters die, or otherwise become nonoperational not charging for one night is a pretty minor inconvenience.

We always make sure we have at least the next days use of charge on the truck so if it doesn’t charge one night we aren’t stuck and can trouble shoot the next day. We find driving electric a million times more convenient than our ICE but it does come with a bit of a rethink on some aspects and you have to plan trips slightly differently but none of that is a huge inconvenience.

Not if you’re charging every night vs only when low. I was at 50% this morning. I’ll just be charging extra tonight instead. No big deal

I think there are some weird issues on the back end of the FordPass system. Just a couple days ago my Explorer starting randomly remote starting in the driveway at times I did not have scheduled.

5
Call_erv_dutyOP•

Now that’s creepy lol

Thanks for the input, I’m chalking it off to faulty servers then. Kinda nuts that it affects charging though, that should really be vehicle side

1
punkrkr27•

It almost seems like someone has a wrong time set on a server somewhere and scheduled events aren't triggering when they are supposed to.

3
Call_erv_dutyOP•

Even the app is extremely slow to update any info. I’m curious about the servers and if they’re in house or being farmed to an outside source.

If they’re in house, Ford needs to bite the bullet and either pay AWS or Microsoft or whoever, or commit to upgrading to handle more frequent communications between vehicles and useds

The charging on this vehicle is so frustrating to use. Home can’t be saved until you charge at a location once. Then you can set preferences. Recently, Home charging would go to 100% without cause other than using a public charger. Tried changing charge amounts for Home back to 90%, 85%, etc and it would still charge to 100%. Had to delete the location and go through setting up a home location again. Finally, charged to my preset.

Same thing happened to me. I happened to look at my phone at 3am to check and noticed it. The app did mention to disconnect and reconnect the charger, so I did and it charged just fine. I would be very upset if I didn’t catch it in time, or worse yet if I had a long commute in the morning.

Thanks for saying something, definitely a FordPass issue

Are you using a mobile charger? If so what color is the light on it?

1
DyngusDan•

I used the Tesla mobile charger and had the same issue.

2
Call_erv_dutyOP•

Blue, no faults on it. No breaker issues either.

If it’s the mobile charger - you’ll only see the charge history of start and stopped. My wallbox had an issue on Monday and the app just said started and stopped 2 min after. Until I unplugged it to restart the wallbox.

I checked and no errors reported from either the car, the app, or the wallbox. So it’s not a mobile charger specific issue.

That said. I had issues with my ford mobile charger before I had my wallbox installed.

Does it work normally? Just a fluke? Or first time using the charger? Charge when you’re awake for a while. And make a point to go out and check your charger every so often and literally watch it for about 2-5 minutes. Watch the lights on it to make sure it’s pulsing one blue square. If it starts showing amber lights or anything else - check the manual for it’s meaning.

My charger worked for a while at first and then I found it to be overheating randomly. So I had the breaker and wire replaced with newer stuff and it worked fine from then on

Not saying yours is going to require that. Just something to look out for.

Unfortunately “why” things aren’t charging is not going to be an easy answer.

Maybe someone out there reading this will improve the type of notifications we get.

This is the fourth day I’ve used the mobile charger, twice on the lightning, twice on my Tesla. No issues otherwise. It’s not a breaker issue, I had my NEMA installed last year right after I bought the house and have had no issues with my Tesla charging.

Based on other reports, I’m going to blame Ford servers being made from toothpicks and bubblegum.

2

That does narrow it. Some chargers I read are also faulty. It’s not unheard of. Sucks that that happens overnight and you won’t know until morning.

:/

1
Call_erv_dutyOP•

Yeah, I’ll just back up scheduled charging to when I’m awake and set a silent alarm to check it.

I had issues where my charger has stopped charging and I have the ChargeStationPro plugged into the truck. What I found is even though I connect the app, and I tell the app to start charging, if I’m not in the vehicle when I tell her to start charging it doesn’t always follow my command. The app has been one of the biggest let downs of this vehicle. Don’t get me wrong. I still am thoroughly enjoying the vehicle, but there are definitely areas of improvement that Ford needs to address with the push towards electric.

That being said, here’s what I have done. First I go into my charge settings while I’m actually in the vehicle. I set up a charge settings in there. In the event that it doesn’t show that it starts charging after it’s supposed start time I go outside and unplug the charger from the truck and plug it back in. In the one rare extreme case where it refused to start, no matter what I did, I tripped the breaker that the plug was in And flipped it back on. Now with your mobile charger and you might just be able to unplug it and plug it back in but I’m not exactly sure on your set up.

The on board charging systems/timers have sucked in nearly every EV. Except maybe Tesla. I’ve owned 4 EVs and have always relied on a 3rd party EVSE, particularly the Juicebox pro 40

1
Call_erv_dutyOP•

Yeah I’m coming from Tesla. As I’ve said everywhere else, scheduled charging needs to be onboard, not tied to the app

2
bkbroils•

Must have been a systemic issue. Mine shut off as well. Amber light this morning, and I was on the 110v mobile charger. Never happened before. And I started the charger manually…was not on a timer.

1
Call_erv_dutyOP•

Hm, that’s slightly more concerning then

Aw man i had the same experience this morning!! How unreliable
