Surfing

Poem

Turns out, I’m good at surfing

I’ve never visited a beach, never balanced a board

I don’t know anyone who surfs

I’ve never desired to try

I didn’t want to start

I don’t want to continue

But the waves demand I surf or drown

Now here I am

Waiting for the tide to settle back down

So I can swim to shore

So I don’t wipe out from one wrong move

So I don’t get caught under

Rag dolled until the waves decide to release me

But instead of conquering the wave

Riding through the tube

Getting barreled by the water

Coming out victorious on the other side

Instead the only barrel I’m seeing is the bottom of one

Wondering why its empty again

Expecting the next wave to come any second now

And instead of telling the waves how much I hate them

Instead of demanding they know how wrong they are for forcing me into this

Instead of leaving the waves in the turmoil of their own making

Instead of dumping myself over the side and letting them have me too

I ride it out and hope tomorrow is a better day
