To the sweet elderly couple next door

Poem

Maybe you heard the nights of young lovers giggling

At movies with the volume a bit too loud

Two voices whispering promises of forever.

And for that,

I apologize,

To the sweet elderly couple next door.

Maybe you heard the nights of sobbing

One lonely voice shrieking

Trying to dull the pain of an unforeseen betrayal.

And for that,

I apologize,

To the sweet elderly couple next door.

Maybe you heard the eerie silence

The emptiness of a dull and lonesome night

Craving a cruel wraith that has since moved onto better things.

And for that,

I apologize,

To the sweet elderly couple next door.

Maybe you heard the novice, out of tune singing

Hopefully observing it’s improvement over the months

Now capable of articulating a basic melody of jubilation.

And for that,

I apologize,

To the sweet elderly couple next door.

Maybe you heard chuckling as the oven timer rings

Right before a gathering of friends that got a bit too rowdy

A few rays of joy shining through grief’s somber mist.

And for that,

I apologize,

To the sweet elderly couple next door.

I have never introduced myself

But I feel like you must know me

Over all that you have heard through these thin walls.

And for my unfriendliness,

I apologize,

To the sweet elderly couple next door.
