Wistful Return

Poem

I climbed the stairs

Of the house I grew up in

Like a lost spirit on a pilgrimage

Seeking purpose and meaning

Wistful thoughts and memories

Not yet scarred with tendencies

Filled my head and left me longing

For days spent unworried about days left

Days lived nonchalant about the day after

Laughter fading, few decades after

My return is to fill a void

A void that formed when I first left this place

As though I'll regain my childhood glee and pure delight

If I am back to where I first discovered them

Maybe the past is glorified

Bad memories torn aside

Nostalgia, a fuel for our future

I came seeking purpose and answers

I leave lost and perplexed

I was looking for the right answers at the wrong place

The answers don’t dwell in the past

Just as I don’t live in the past
