RP Tryouts Season 1 Discussion

[ DISCUSSION ]

Rob seems to talk more about this subreddit than the people here talk at all, meaning that he's mentioned it once or twice. Given that, I think it would be nice to discuss how RP Tryouts season 1 went—what people thought about the format, the contestants, or anything else.

I wish I could give more feedback about it, but I just found it to be great—the contestants, judges, and events all seemed well-chosen and provided varied, interesting content. Even the fairly brutal date nights were entertaining and showed the comparative talent of the lobby.

What did you think about it?

A great idea that was also executed well. I just hope they don't happen too often tbh

Well get ready, it's apparently a ~4 times a year thing now. Season 2 starts in a month

that is not sustainable. adding about 25 extra new members a year seems way to high unless the lobby suffers a lot more attrition.

The lobby has also gained regular members outside the competition in the past year as well (rpr, mimiqu, neomi, gen 6 mutes, etc)

I suspect when the lobby starts feeling overly full the tryouts will stop.

I don't think sustainability is too much of a problem -- it just comes down to having less winners per season. You get the same amount of content out of it whether you let one person or seven people in. (Actually, you probably get even more content by letting less people in, it just might be more heartbreaking).

I agree that adding 7 people every few months would get crowded quickly though.

You could also have prizes other than lobby membership if Rob feels bad having so many people go home empty handed. e.g. stuff like art commissions, or maybe find a sponsor for a season and have them supply something as prizes. The whole format of a weekly gameshow style RP competition has a lot of potential even outside of lobby recruitment.

My favorite Rob content in a while. Some thoughts:

  • In week 1 the contestants ran one-off improv RP scenarios with lobby members made up by the judges. This was a good idea they should use more because it forces contestants to adapt. For example: I don't think Cag would've survived as long if he didn't impress the judges with his improv RP in week 1.
  • The PvP shooter should be dropped. It was underwhelming to watch IMO and is irrelevant to RP or the lobby's usual content. Prison Break might be a better choice since there's RP elements.
  • Related to above, Rob floated team-based RP events in week 1. This could be more fully capitalized on.
  • Lobby member judges should rotate weekly or daily. This would help keep favoritism in check, which helps keep contestants on their toes. IMO, it only really took one judge to carry someone through an event.
  • Contestants repeating characters was a recurring issue. Rob could require all contestants to have new chars every week, or just anyone he thinks is slacking.
  • This is obvious, but Rob should absolutely invest effort into booking streamers as guest judges to drive hype. They also provide less biased opinions.
  • Related to above, mixing the RP tryouts with streamer elim dating was a fantastic idea. Since the RP tryouts ran on Tuesday/Wednesday, it'd even have the bonus of making it easier to get streamers who can't make Thursdays.

The contestants were honestly way better than I thought they were going to be considering the basis of the idea was taking people from chat and putting them through a bunch of events. Format created some pretty good drama and just an overall solid event while letting bar RP take a bit of a break. I do hope bar RP comes back though since it's my personal favorite RP on Rob's stream and it would be interesting to see what twists the new additions could provide to it.

It was very fun to watch and my favorite content in awhile. People that made it were pretty deserving.

If I had to complain about something its that some people brought out the same characters repeatedly. That probably falls more on the contestants though. I imagine it's hard to judge based off of a character they've done every week. An rper being able to change and bring new, refreshing, well thought out characters is probably the most important thing for entertainment value in my eyes. Return characters can be good if they aren't overdone (like moistbringer) but every week is too much.

Matt starting to switch characters every week is probably a huge part of the reason he was able to make it (deservedly so) while cag did not.

Very good event overall no matter what the final results were. The real test is how much it'll take them to have the lobby warmup to them and vice versa or if that'll even happen in the first place.

I mostly have questions for the future like how many of the new lobby members will still be around by the time season 2 starts and what the percentage of old contests vs new faces will be on season 2. Being invested enough to ask myself those questions is a pretty good sign of success for this event.

Hope hat dancin does better in season 2, and I think Robs gonna have a hard time if he keeps doing back to back seasons should be a 6 month wait at least. Give the fresh blood time to shine

There were some people and characters I didn't like. There were some people and characters I really liked. Some of the first got in, some of the later were sent home, and vice versa. Most importantly anyway is, it was super fun overall. The events and tests were very entertaining. The guts some of the contestants had to scream the things they did made me laugh a lot. That's the (lewd) RP spirit I personally like seeing. I even stayed awake 2 hours more than usual these last two days just to savour the sweet content. I loved the xdds in chat and I'm glad Chalupa, Lapu and Chichi made it in.

I wonder however how the (new?) judges and chat are gonna review the presentation videos of people who have already participated without being bias towards them. I doubt people will forget who individuals like Savy and others were, and so I suppose they'll naturally have a tougher time or something. Nonetheless, looking forward to it fr fr.

It was extremely fun. Lots of amazing new blood joining and I can’t wait to see what they do. At first I thought it was gunna be cringe, which it still did have, but still made me laugh. Shitters like Sevy, despite knowing he wouldn’t make it or even last in the lobby, was a absolute trip and made it so funny. I can’t wait till the next one.

It was my favourite type of event Rob has done in a while. Although with how often they'll be happening - I feel like 8 people might be a little much to be letting in at once. Either way it'll be interesting to see how well the people who got in manage to fit in.

Great event overall that injected some welcome variety into the VRC routine. The only real complaint is Rob's idea to run this 4 times a year because that's too much.

Unexpectedly amazing entertainment given all the bad past experiences with bringing in viewers. Who knew all you needed to do was prescreen people by RP potential instead of how much $$ they have lol.

It's like Golden Gator meets Total Drama Island and I love it

Callout Margot for being the candycorn of talkers. Better than nothing but your not happy to see them.
