How do you make winding/curved staircases?

I have been wondering this for awhile. After some google-fu, I had found some decent ones, but not many layouts for them. To be clear, what I am asking about is something like this, but larger and for the exterior of a building. I know that I have seen them in some builds (and also on the public reddit servers), but I haven't found a way to successfully replicate them. Towards the top half of the stairs, it doesn't have to be curved, it could be a straight away, I am just looking for information about the curved section. It has been really bothering me, so I am looking for tips, if anyone has some advice to offer. Thanks!

Lots of trial and error!

I tend to load up a creative save and start by building the outside circle that the spiral will sit within. Then it's a case of trial and error to work out exactly how to do the spirals nicely. It becomes even more complicated when you need to worry about how many blocks you have between floors; I tend to resort to graph paper at that point!

I think it helps if you use slabs or a combination of stairs and slabs instead of solely stairs. Also use the Minecraft Circles guide.

lay out a set of concentric circles. then as you go around the circle, increment your material height. Slabs will work best and give you the most freedom for adjustment. once you've done a couple steps, you should have a pretty good pattern going.
