I just sent ten Baofeng radios to Ukraine

Discussion

I did my part. I reprogrammed then to transmit and receive every frequency and not have any transmit limits. And I put the cable to reprogram then in the box.

Good. Now the troops can listen in on Russian comms.

Nice one, I was thinking how was what he did safe for UA forces but this makes so much sense

I wouldn't trust transmitting anything on those Baofeng radios if my life depended on it. Everybody in range will be able to listen in.

Fake artillery coordinates could be a good start

I think there are lot of use cases for walkie talkies away from immediate contact line.

All I can think of are the Ukrainians laughing their asses of at the Russians artillery guys bitching each other out over the radio.

There are a lot of cases to use them far from front line.

And so can China, they will finally figure out that Russians are fucked up.

Those radios are single channel FM no crypto and they generate a bunch of spurious signals as well.

Unfortunately the Motorola DMR/Mototrbo radios that have been asked for many times are excessively expensive, made of unobtanium, and too difficult to program in the field. You can get 20 of these cheap throwaway radios for the price of one Motorola. The cryptography comes not from the radio, but from the users. Pretty much the same thing they have to do with the DMR radios since those are only slightly more difficult to listen to. When you see pictures of the soldiers, you don't see anything like Harris military grade comms. Everything seems to be consumer grade anyway.

i'm not that deep into SDR and computer-based radio communication, but can't you in theory connect boefangs to a computer and then send out encrypted signals & then decrypt them again with a computer in the same way?

fading_realityβ€’

you can feed it and receive analog signal that will get modulated/demodulated on top of FM - there might be use cases for that, but unlikely to be practical.

Talk about ways to make a contribution that is many orders of magnitude outsized compared to cost... This contribution is exhibit A. Fantastic idea.

Will they be calling russian artillery strikes on russian positions?

2
ManyAreaOPβ€’

That have some of the same equipment that uses the same frequencies, so not Russian positions.
