how the hell do you fight madarame?

DISCUSSION

Is it just luck and I hit the jackpot the first time I played this game at launch? I've been trying to beat madarame for the past 5ish hours, how the fuck do you beat him? I target the eyes with physical and the nose and mouth with magic. I can get to phase 2 sometimes but about 75% of the time he targets my weaknesses and one shots me before I can take him to phase 2.

Phase 2 seems easier as I'm consistently able to stop the elemental madarames but I can't touch the middle for any turns because I have to focus on keeping the elemental ones down because if I don't they kill my party in one go. I use baton pass, I can't use items because he one shots me so I either have to guard or knock them all down which leaves me barely any space to attack and I only do about 60 damage to the main one anyway

I don't understand it. I played the game when it first came out and found it easy, everything up until this point has been a cake walk but it's been nearly 6 hours and I'm exhausted.

If you really don't want to go back and grind, using a DLC persona may make sense to get you over this hump and back to the rest of the game. There is no leader board of players who beat the game without DLC personas and this isn't an online only competitive game so if you would enjoy the game more using an overpowered persona for a boss fight, that's your prerogative and it is nothing to be ashamed of. You can even just save one of them for tricky situations like this and not use it unless you are struggling

The reason I didn't was mainly because it would take roughly the same amount of effort, what I mostly didn't want to do was go back to before stealing the painting but I'd have to do that either way, also idk if I'm high enough level for any of the dlc personas to be helpful, you still need to meet the requirement right? I've never actually used one

With the DLC persona you can get them once from the compendium for 0 yen at any level

You could get Izanami no Okami right now with no restriction and Myriad Truths your way to the endgame with no problems

Well God damn lol

if you have a previouse save reload it and grind some you might be underleveled this time around happened when i faught okomura if vanilla 5 and ended up getting lucky cause i didnt have a previouse save

I have no idea how 16 year old me beat this piece of shit but I guess I gotta grind. My last save before him was like 7 hours ago but almost all of that was his boss fight so I'm not going back that far

well the fight in vanilla was easier than royal all the fights in royal have extra mechanics

I don't remember his fight at all from the original so idk what's different, I just feel like it's not difficult just based on chance. Most fights require strategy but I've just been hoping he uses the right attacks instead of ruining me. Tbh idk if grinding much will help, I'm level 16~17 and Idk if a few more levels are going to help...

well in those few more levels your party might get extra skills same for your personas that hit just a little bit harder cause part of your problem sounds like damage output

Madarame is one of the hardest bosses in the game, despite being the second palace ruler. The reason is the problem you keep experiencing, and it's he can target every party member weakness in one turn and wipe you out immediately.

Some advice... You seem to be in a bind, and frustration can ruin a great experience of a game if left unchecked:

The best way to deal with the first phase is to use Rakunda on the Eyes andhave Ryuji and Yusuke use AoE physical attacks (Yusuke needs to be level18 to learn a physical AOE) to neutralize the Eyes as soon as possible. The eyes drain all elemental attacks and cast all elemental attacks, the mouth drains physical and employs physical, and the nose casts tarunda and rakunda. Once the eyes are out of the way, your fight gets much easier because now the threat of weakness is gone. If possible, have Joker equipped with a Persona of every single target base element for coverage in the second half of the fight. Use items that improve your turn by turn defense, and continue to heal through skills or items. This can be a battle of attrition, but with patience, and focusing on the bigger problems of the first half of the fight, you should emerge victorious. With the second half, this is why you have Joker with every base element; Exploit the Baton Pass system to its absolute fullest potential. Continue to 1 More, and target the shadows weak to the element of the character being controlled. Joker having all the base elements will allow coverage for whatever character you don't have in your party, and also if Madarame throws out two, or three, of the same element. 1 More, and baton pass. Rinse, and repeat. If you do it right, you'll breeze right through his second phase.

Also, based on your comment about your save, another big piece of advice that I'm sure you've figured out by this point: Save often, have multiple saves, and always have a separate save before the final palace infiltration (When you're at the hideout, not when you enter the palace). If you get jammed up with the boss, you can at least revert back to that save, buy necessary materials, and grind out the palace leading up to the boss if you need levels/personas.

I hope this helps, let us know how it turns out. Don't give up.

I generally can't fully abuse baton pass because ryuji or Yusuke almost always die. I do save pretty often it's just that I started trying to beat him last night and it's now breakfast so my last save before sending the calling card was about an hour before I started fighting him or like 6 or 7 hours ago lol

I'm taking a break but I'll try and see what I can do to further stack if in my favor. I didn't want to grind because I got the impression the issue would remain unless I was heavily over leveled due to the weaknesses. I also think as is I could win but it would be entirely because of chance. I don't think there's a level that the elemental weakness won't cripple me unless I get double the health. I just don't remember it being this hard lol

You don't need to be overleveled to fight him, at that point you're making the game too easy lol.

Based on what you're saying, though, I'm getting the impression, and this is merely observation, you're actually under leveled, so the elemental clone's attacks are decimating your team relative to their weakness (Unless their health was already shot from the first phase and they weren't healed during the first phase).

But when the fake Madarames are first spawned, you get first turn. I don't think I've had a situation, in multiple playthroughs, where Madarame gets first turn after he spawns the fakes, it's always he makes his speech, he spawns the fakes (Which the first set will always been one each of the base elements), and after Morgana makes a comment, the turn is yours. That is the prime opportunity to start the baton pass, and also the opportunity to debuff, rebuff, and heal. In most circumstances, Madarame's second phase is a cakewalk, as long as you're using the correct elements to the opposing ones, and not using AOE spells that will backfire on you, cancelling out the 1 More, and any hope of a baton pass chain.

What is your current level for your team, out of curiosity, and do you still have your single target spells on everyone?

Change your saving habits imo.

Save whenever you can in a palace and maybe once a weak in the real world. Also, have at least 5 different save files and rotate through them as you save

You can't save mid fight

Every time you are in a save room

Bring ann, mona and ryuji/yusuke. I prefer yusuke over ryuji as elec chair ame gives a +5 STR weapon for yusuke, which is bugged to +10 STR, and yusuke gets vicious strike at Lv 18

On round 1 of phase 2, joker casts tarukaja on Yusuke so he will deal 40% more damage and start the baton pass combo on mona's/ann's turn. Mona casts wind, baton pass to ann, ann casts fire, baton pass to joker, joker casts elec, baton pass to yusuke, yusuke casts ice, 1 More and yusuke cast Vicious Strike to hit all. The clones have about 250 HP.

On round 2 of phase 2, joker casts rakunda on the boss so the boss will take 40% more damage.

Wall skills? Idk you seem pretty out of options if a baton pass chains to 4 isn't enough. If you're not chaining to 4, chain to 4. By getting the earlier elemental accessories you can provide your party members with more versatility. After you've chained to 4, Giant Slice Madarame with Yusuke, then clear out the elemental clones. Orobas gets Marakunda which will help with both the first and second phases as well.

randoMMise•

The second phase is about attrition - after a number of turns of removing fakes, Madarame will start producing fakes with ailments, allowing you to get easy Technical damage and potentially extra one-mores.

Don't forget to guard with a character if it makes sense to, and try to keep Joker with a persona without a Fire/Wind/Elec/Ice weakness, so he can't be knocked down.

Multi-target skills are also obviously very valuable here - skills like Rampage (which Ryuji learns) can really help with the first phase for instance.
