Advice on Lego design software

Question

My son is an avid Lego collector/builder/designer. He likes to create all kinds of different things: spaceships, robots, little vignettes, buildings, etc. The biggest limitation he has right now is the amount of Lego that he has to work with. I was doing some research and saw that there are various Lego design software out there, so here’s my question to this community: what is the preferred software for designing things out of Lego?

As an add-on question, are there any recommendations as to hardware for running such software? Currently he has a chrome book that he uses for school and some other stuff. I think it was like $100, so it’s not exactly top-of-the-line. He is 16, to the extent that matters. I appreciate any advice you all have.

Stud.io

This. Stud.io is developed by and integrated with Bricklink, the largest online Lego reseller market, which is in turn owned by Lego themselves.

Just to add to this, I don't think BrickLink Studio will run on a Chromebook. I believe it's only for Windows or Mac. OP would need to get his son a different laptop to use Studio. I use Studio on a Inspiron 15 3000 laptop that cost under $500 and it runs just fine.

As TechyDay said, Stud.io will need either a Mac or a Windows computer. I can't seem to find any sort of requirements on the site, but I have run it on some rather old computers in the past with out issue. Anything that can run Windows 10 or High Sierra (Mac) will likely be adequate.

If a Mac or Windows computer isn't an option, you may have luck with Mecabricks.com. I'm not a fan of it personally, and have never tried to use it on a Chromebook, but it may suit your needs.

Mecabricks is my recommendation.

i use mecabricks on my Chromebook. it runs on browser, unlike Stud.io, which has to be downloaded to be used. Stud.io also can't be downloaded on a Chrome.

Edit: if you decide to use mecabricks, I recommend getting a mouse for his chromebook if you don't have one.
