A MORE VISCERAL WORLD
I used to be seventeen.
I used to be waterworks.
I used to think everything
In this damn world was
An evil hoax.
I used to like songs that
They didn't play on the radio.
I used to think I was not
Like other kids so I
Kept it low.
I was Ptolemy, and everything
Must've revolved around me.
Sun and moon, Venus,
Even Uranus,
Even Mercury.
But I was also Atlas,
The cosmos upon my collar.
Everyone was happy and
Normal and I was
The miserable irregular.
But all these faded memories
Of a more visceral world
Are just relics
Are just antiques
Archaic and gnarled.
I used to be seventeen,
I used to be waterworks.
Now I'm older, steelier.
Hopefully won't quiver
When the road of life forks.
