Funerals
There are no words
to dull the pain
and so we hold each other
letting silent comfort reign.
The only voices are quiet,
trying to fill the void
with out of place laughter
and words
and noise.
People speak softly
so as not to disturb
not the dead, but the living
still walking the earth.
Funerals aren’t for the dead,
they’re for the living.
A place to share our grief
with a pat on the head,
a kiss on the cheek.
Those who’ve been there know
that a family stands strongest
when its members are weak.
If you’re looking from the outside,
keep one thing in mind:
it’s not the dead you should mourn for,
but those they leave behind.
Throats tight and hearts heavy
We gather ‘round
and stand unsteady
Around cheeks painted rosy
and made to look sweet;
dozens of roses
and tear stains at our feet.
We’re holding children
who don’t yet understand
where they went,
or why they’ve left this land.
The things that we feel
no words can explain
We share so much love,
and so much pain.
