The books I purchased (from top to bottom), with quick reviews for the ones I’ve read already. Feel free to ask questions or chime in on books you’ve already read!

  • Ms. Tree: Deadline by Max Allan Collins & Terry Beaty – I haven’t gotten to this collection yet, but I’ve enjoyed more Ms. Tree stories than I haven’t so I figured I’d continue to give these nice reprints from Titan a try. Very much one of the better pulpy crime thriller comics I’ve encountered.
  • The Night Eaters: She Eats the Night by Marjorie Liu & Sana Takeda – Wanted to like this more. It’s pretty good, but the story felt flat for me. There was some great character work though, and Takeda’s artwork is just as wonderfully moody and atmospheric as it is in Monstress.
  • Vendetta: Holy Vindicator by Steve McArdle – I’m enjoying this collaboration between Power Comics and Floating World Comics, but this one might have been a bit too over the top for me. It’s filled with derivative superhero/action hero tropes and is very loud and bombastic, which will definitely appeal to some. Since I never was really into that era of superhero comics, it doesn’t really work for me.
  • Follow Me Down by Ed Brubaker & Sean Phillips – Another fun entry in the Reckless series. I haven’t found Brubaker & Phillips’ Reckless to be as good as their previous works, but the floor for this duo is so high that I would still say this is amongst the better crime comics one can sample today. Follow Me Down is a little predictable and comprised of too many crime thriller tropes, but Brubaker’s sharp script and the artwork by Sean & Jacob Phillips is more than enough to keep me engaged.
  • Acid Nun by Corinne Halbert – I read the last issue individually when Halbert was serializing this series, as well as when some of this was shown in issues of Vacuum Decay, but was very excited to pick this up as a collected volume. It’s really good – and Acid Nun is basically a front for a much more personal story. Yeah, there are demons, sex and acid trips abundant in this book, but a lot of this is metaphor for actual trauma. Some of the themes may have benefitted from more story, but overall I thought this was an excellent comic.
  • Baltimore Omnibus Vol. 2 by Mike Mignola, Chris Golden, Peter Bergting, Ben Stanbeck & various – I really enjoyed the first volume, and seeing this for $10 on IST basically compelled me to pick this up. I’ve never read the original novel by Mignola & Golden, but I had no issues understanding the story in Vol. 1, and hoping that continues with this volume. Baltimore tells the story of a monster hunter seeking vengeance against an ancient vampire, but as he travels across a war torn Europe he faces new challenges. It kind of feels like Usagi Yojimbo, but more horror inspired.
  • Jodorowsky Library Vol. 4 by Alejandro Jodorowsky, Silvio Cadelo, Jean-Claude Gal, Jerome Opeña, JH Williams III and Ciruelo – A lot of Jodo’s stories fall flat for me, but he always secures top notch artistic talent. After seeing the artists included in this volume, I couldn’t pass it up.
  • One Beautiful Spring Day (signed hardcover & slipcase) by Jim Woodring – Specifically held off on buying the trade to pick up the hardcover. It’s a gorgeous book, and I think I’ll have a separate post showing this off tomorrow.
  • Miracleman Omnibus by [redacted], Garry Leach, Alan Davis & various – One of my all-time favorite books by Alan Moore, and I’m happy to get it in one book (recoloring be damned). About half of this book is extras which might bother some, but I’m totally down for extras from the massive amounts of artistic talent that went into this run. I'm currently a third of the way through, and it's just as good of read years later.
  • Slash Them All by Antoine Maillard – A really fun slasher tale that takes classic noir tropes and mixes it with 80s slasher film tropes. This is very refined work for a debut graphic novel, even if the story could have used a bit more fleshing out.
  • The World of Black Hammer Library Edition Vol. 4 by Jeff Lemire, Tonci Zonjic, Tyler Crook & various – A little behind on supplementary Black Hammer titles, but I plan on catching up soon.
  • Vuzz by Philippe Druillet – Basically a series of black & white stories by Druillet that remind me a little of Moebius’ Arzach. It’s a little too slapstick at times and the character Vuzz is pretty deplorable, but it’s Druillet so I still had a good time with it. I will say that without color, the thin linework by Druillet becomes a bit more challenging for me to engage with, but there was still a lot to appreciate art wise.

love these reviews! bummer about Night Eaters, Monstress is one of my favorite ongoing series so I had high hopes — I’ll still check it out tho. and you’re the first person I’ve seen who read Acid Nun! I’ve been meaning to pick it up. I tend to like Silver Sprockets stuff and I want to support more indie pubs

I think if you like Monstress there's a good chance you'll enjoy The Night Eaters too, so definitely pick it up if it interests you.

And yeah, I like delving into smaller publishers and self-published stuff. Acid Nun was definitely a very unique type of comic and I enjoyed it a ton. It probably won't be for everyone because of the very heavy themes and how overtly perverse it gets at times, but it was a nice thought provoking comic for me. Would recommend if you're into that kind of stuff.

I didn't realize Miracleman had been recolored. Is it bad? Do you know if it's the same coloring as the smaller hardcover volumes that were available before?

It's not as garish of a recolor as the ones for Moore's Swamp Thing run or The Killing Joke, but it is noticeable if you have seen the original issues. There are definitely times where I think the recoloring is an actual improvement, though personally I prefer the original colors overall. That said, I did read it originally with the new colors since I read the reprints put out by Marvel. Here is a thread from a long time ago showing some comparisons.

If you are referring to the hardcover volumes published by Marvel a decade ago, then yes those had the new colors. I think only the Eclipse hardcovers and trades had the original colors.

I've read Follow Me Down and the Miracleman series, both good as you stated. I've yet to check out Black Hammer and some of the others. Baltimore sounded good. Thanks.

Isn't there a main series that's just "Black Hammer"? Would you be able to say if there's any significant difference between that and "World of Black Hammer"? Sorry to bother.

3
yarkcirOP•

Not a bother at all!

Yeah there was an original Black Hammer series (13 issues + an annual) which was collected in the first Black Hammer Library Edition. Then there were some follow up series and spin-offs that were collected in the second Library Edition and the first World of Black Hammer Library Edition. There have been even more spin-off since that have been collected in World of Black Hammer Library Edition Vol. 2-4 (with a fifth volume solicited for next year).

The spin-offs are purely supplemental, so you could just read the original series and enjoy it on its own. I've enjoyed most of what I've read so far, so I figured I'd continue picking these up but I wouldn't say they are essential.

Thank you so much for the response. I read the first HC Library edition and loved it but haven't continued cause I kept meaning to look up the deal with all the collections. But I also keep trying other books which has kept me busy. Thank again for explaining. I REALLY appreciate it.

Surprised he didn't actually explain it, but you want to read World of Black Hammer 1 after "Black Hammer" Library volume 1.

Oh! Ok thank you.

That Miracleman Omni is huge! I was initially put off by the price, but finally came to my senses and ordered one. It should get here by the end of the week.

As for the recolouring, I'm definitely glad to have it for the early issues; the original Eclipse colouring of the B&W stories from Warrior Magazine was garbage. It looked like it had been done by the work experience kid using Magic Markers. A real shame, as Garry Leach's B&W art on those stories is glorious.

There's a ton of extras in the omnibus including some of the black & white pages from Leach, Davis and others. It would have been nice to get full black & white for certain sections for sure though.

I'm looking forward to checking out the extras!

I didn't realize World of Black Hammer vol 4 was out yet, thank you for your service!

It was released early with certain distributors, but Amazon has the release date set for Nov 15. But glad I could remind you to pick up Vol. 4!
