Why did The Burning (1981) never become a franchise?

In my opinion The Burning is one of the best summer camp slashers of all time, realistically it's better than most of the entries in the Friday the 13th franchise save for a few notable exceptions. It's also a much better made movie than Sleepaway Camp from a technical perspective and acting wise. However, despite all of that, The Burning never spawned a franchise unlike the other two. It has always amazed me that Friday the 13th became one of the biggest Slashers of all time when even Friday fans acknowledge the first movie was far from a masterpiece and it didn't even have an iconic villain yet.

This is less a rant and more genuine curiosity trying to understand what makes certain franchises become huge hits whereas others never transcend that much despite being equal or even superior in quality. I understand why Halloween or Nightmare on Elm Street became a big deal, they were completely revolutionary when they came out and also top notch movies. But why did Friday the 13th become huge whereas The Burning never did despite being arguably similar or even better than most Friday entries?
