Best characters to spend XP books on/invest in?

I'm pretty new into the game, halfway through indomintus, and starting indom mirror.

Is there a recommendation on what characters to prioritize in leveling /applying XP buffs too? Or is it preferable to spread these out among non-trash characters?

Thanks so much!
