The purpose of camos

Like most of everyone else, l've played CoD for years. But what I've never done is get into the whole prestige/camo grind. I still don't really care about the prestige thing, but what is the purpose of camos? Are they just a bragging rights thing or what? (No offense intended to anyone, I am genuinely curious why people make a big deal over camos)
