Not exactly three-finger style like OP was talking about, hence why I mentioned the Del Mccoury version.

also listen to the original version of High on a Mountain: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JfpQt78NFC0 really good tune

To me, "deep mountainy" tends to suggest modal sounds, while "old timey" is something completely different.

A great example of modal sounding bluegrass banjo that everyone has heard is "High on a Mountain" by Del McCoury

If you like that modal sound, you may have entered the gateway to mashgrass.

A couple random examples of the same sort of sound/the same ideas in a more modern bluegrass setting:

When Sorrows Encompass Me Around - The Boxcars

Town That Isn't There - Adam Steffy

Just Beyond the Window - Volume Five

Love for an Angel - Ronnie Bowman

This Sad Song - AKUS

If you're head-banging along to those, welcome to the cult.

Great recommendation, thanks. Trying to track down a three-finger/scurggs tab/lesson of it now.

Sandy Boys is really close to Clinch Mountain

The tuning is very easy, take your b string and tune it up to c. That’s it.

Shady grove is usually played that’s way, but fyi many people play it in a major key too, so not every version will have that sound you are looking for.

Ay excellent call, I need to check out this tuning. I actually started picking the melody to Shady Grove without thinking after practicing Clinch Mountain a bunch last night, so it’s definitely in that vein, lots of the same notes. Thanks so much!

You probably want sawmill tunes then. Many of them are in Dorian and have that sound. So google sawmill tuning and you’ll find some. I like the cuckoo, shady grove, cold frosty morn, cluck old hen, there are so many. Sawmill tuning, also known as a mountain modal, mountain minor, pretty Polly tuning, etc…

You can try out some mixolydian songs too. Someone mentioned high on a mountain, that’s a great one by Ola Belle reed.

Salt river is often the name for the old timey version of the song, check that out instead. The Kaia kater version is really good.

Checking it out now, this is more on the bluegrass-y side of what I’m looking for but I really like it, it’s a delightful melody and I’ll put it on the list. Thank you!

Salt Creek goes nicely with Clich Mountain imo

If you go to the clawhammer side I think "Lonesome John" sounds very similar to Clinch Mountain Backstep if not where old Ralph got the inspiration for the song.

Cumberland Gap has a similar sound and the Scruggs tab will also get you comfortable with playing up the neck.

Picked up the banjo recently and have learned a few tunes in the three-finger style, recently been learning Clinch Mountain Backstep and loving the deep mountain-y vibe of it. What other songs should I know about that have that far backwoods sounding ("High Lonesome") super old timey sound?

Eventually I'd like to maybe try to put together some medleys, so bonus if it's something that I could easily segue into from Clinch Mountain!

edit: I should specify, looking for songs in the three-finger style, like Scruggs style, which I want to continue to focus on for a while before I try learning clawhammer
