A server rack and UNRAID don’t need to be mutually exclusive :)

I’m unsure where you came up with the philosophy that unraid servers should be “lean”. Who defines lean anyway?

If someone grotesquely overbuilds a server, it has exactly zero impact on my life.

Other than VMs and containers, sure. And unRAID is plenty for home use.

I may not be the average unraid user but I do have a use for the 2700X in my server.
I run media automation, game servers and a huge VM for software development for when I'm not home since the 2700X is way more powerful than my laptop CPU.

In the end unraid gives you the possibility to do whatever you want with docker and VM so there's no correct build, it just depends on what you do with it.

Also a home lab is way more expensive than just putting a 5900X in a box, especially when they are so cheap at the moment

Not sure why you’re downvoted. Unraid systems should be lean, there really isn’t anything on unraid that you need an insane amount of power…at that point, just go build a server rack and do a home lab

I'm guessing OP is hinting at using a Windows VM to run Blue Iris. I'd say they should be fine to run this along with the other common unraid dockers you describe on their existing 5600x.

Generally I would say no. No reason it shouldn't work, it's the big brother of what you have, so technically it's fine. It's just (generally) not good.

You provide little to no information. From reading here, I expect most people to use unraid as a nas, media server, download automation and a couple extra dockers. There is nothing needing 12 cores, a 4 core system is plenty. Make that an intel system for the igpu and it's a perfect system.

You mention you might do home surveillance. I'm not English or from the US, so it might be a common thing there, but that doesn't tell me much. That can go from really light stuff like a home automation software monitoring some door and window sensors, motion sensors, vibration sensors and so on, to a ton of cameras on the other end. And while I expect you mean camera, not knowing how many and what software you'd use (generally image based things are best handled by a gpu, but the software needs to support that) it's still impossible to say.

So ma

5x SGx18 16tb, 3xnvme 2x sata ssd 128gb 3200mhz ram

hes prolly got like 6-10 hdds to idle at that

or maybe its just not idle, 200w for a consumer-grade system is crazy if its light on the drives

How? I have a 11700 and it’s like 269w all day :(!

Damn man. What is your build like? I think mine idles at like 50-75W with an i7-11700, 32GB ram. X4 16TB Exos and a 1TB WD Black m.2.

You could set the options in bios to make it run in eco mode and get 98% of the performance for around half the power/heat

My server is connected to a UPS, which is where I got the number from.

Mine idles at 110W (5900X as well). Are your HDDs always spinning and never idle?

I have six drives and when all of them are on its about 39w more but nothing like in your range

this is incredible, I'm rocking a 3970x with 55w idle.

I run a 5900x no issues, but my box sits around 185-200w idle

Thank you. I currently have a 3600x in my current gaming rig which is about to be replaced. My current system will become my server.

I had no issues with the 3600. I could have continued with the 3600, but I wanted extra cores because I run several VMs on a regular basis.

I plan to upgrade my machine to a 3600x in the near future. Did you run into any issues using the CPU?

The more cores you have, the more you can afford to dedicate to VMs. The 5900X is decently priced and gives you a platform that will last for many years.

I went from 3600 to 5900X and it sure is nice watching all 12 cores get hammered with some of my scenarios.

I used a 5950x for about a year and it worked great, i just never made use of all those cores/threads but it was nice having them! Ive since moved my 5950 to my personal rig and my older i7 to unraid. As long as you accessorize accordingly you shouldnt have any issues

For home surveillance there is Frigate which uses minimal CPU provided you have a google coral for object detection and a GPU for encoding.

Yeah, it's typically under the CPU or overclocking section in the bios. Quite a simple toggle, it seems

Yeah, right in the bios! Should be a simple toggle

Hmmm, which "tips and tweaks" are you referring to?

ECO mode is a feature that's quite specific to AMD Ryzen CPUs...

Is this similar with the power saving options in 'tips and tweaks', is one better than the other?

To help with power consumption, consider running it on ECO mode. The reduction in typical power consumption is considerable, yet performance impact is practically negligible, unless running processes that demand 100% on all available cores.

I've been running eco mode on my 3950X Unraid for almost 2 years, and intend to do so once I replace my 5950X rig.

Edit: adding an article reference:

I run a 3950x with 16 cores 😁 so yeah I would say a 5900x is good for unRAID.

I would suggest it only if you want to use your server as your desktop PC also, with a vm of your choice of os running and consuming a GPU, some cores and some ram and storage.

If not, I'd personally use a less power hungry chip in a seperate box for unraid and its VM's and only turn on the 5900X machine when you need raw horse power, such as for gaming, cad etc.

I personally use a 5900x as my unraid machine but it also has VM's for my Windows 10 for gaming and Mac OS for anything else.

I will be moving my server next week to a dedicated box, and keep my 5900X off unless I want to play flight simulator, otherwise my macbook air is plenty of grunt for what I do other than gaming.

Run your future 5700x CPU in eco mode (45W). You'll see no drop in performance in day to day and only 3% - 6% off heavy all core loads. That 20W adds up on an always on device. The Ryzen 5000 series is absolutely fantastic for performance per watt.

I’m going for a 5700x. Tdp 65 watts and 16 threads. Downgrade from a 5950x. Too much power.

OP already has a 5600x for Unraid. If they went with an Intel CPU, he would need to get a new mobo as well which would increase the cost.

Well for the same price you can get an i7 13700k which has better performance. I also was at the same point and an and user pointed out to me that he had a lot of issues with and cpu and GPU.
So I'm ditching and and will get Intel

I run a plex and next cloud docker along with 3 game servers and a windows server. I'm currently a very slow intel i5 3550 and was considering a 5900x since they are so cheap. Was gonna pair it with my gtx 1050.

I have a p400 for Plex encoding.

I run a gaming vm and want to use more vms in the future.

Only if you don’t run Plex or anything else that would benefit from quicksync. Then, it’s a terrible choice that will likely require you to add a video card

Seems like a good upgrade to my 5600X that only has 6 cores. I care a LITTLE about power consumption, but then I'd probably have to revamp my whole system.

I usually only run one VM at a time, but might be adding more for a home surveillance system.

Is a 5900X a good choice for Unraid?
