How many players for Sailors on the Starless Sea?

Have some friends coming into town and was planning on running SotSS with them, but we couldn't really pull together a typical group of 4 players. Think it would still work, and be fun, with 2 players and 4-5 level 0s each? Obviously, reinforcements discovered along the way might be important. Any other thoughts or experiences running with a small group? TIA.
