Buying Thanksgiving Turkeys for Employees

Hello,

First time I am posting here. I'm looking for ideas on ways to supply Frozen Turkeys for Thanksgiving to my employees. I want to do this a few days before Thanksgiving. I'm looking for good ways to store the Turkeys and keep them cold. I wish to purchase them about a week before Thanksgiving, as the local grocery stores around me run out of good-sized turkeys a couple of days before Thanksgiving. I have about 30 employees and plan to purchase 20lbs Turkeys. I appreciate any ideas on storing these.

Why not just make it even easier and buy them a giftcard for a store to buy a turkey. Then can deal with keeping it refrigerated

100% because what if they purchased a turkey already.

This is the correct answer. It's a lovely gesture to think of your employees for Thanksgiving.

Some things to be mindful of from a DEI perspective too: not everyone celebrates holidays, not everyone eats meat.

Grocery gift cards is definitely the way to do it-- everyone eats!

My $.02 is don’t. A gift card is appreciated more. Don’t like turkey, doesn’t have the setup at home or desire to cook it, etc.

My husband’s company once made gift bags with cards to get groceries, some bakery gift card, snacks. A dinner in a box. It was awesome.

A few years ago our management team did this - they sent out a form to everyone that asked whether each person wanted a turkey, a ham or "a vegetarian option" (not sure what it was). Then they ordered them from a small grocery store and we picked the time when we wanted to go pick our own up. The grocery store had a list and just checked us off

Thats sensible

You would have an easier time (and your employees would likely better appreciate) getting grocery store gift cards. What about staff that are vegetarian, don't have freezer/fridge space for a turkey, or won't be cooking for Thanksgiving? The thought is very generous, but it would be so much easier to just get gift cards.

This. My house and fridge is tiny. Plus my oven is terrible and it’s just the two of us at home and only one of us eats meat. Getting a turkey would be super stressful and I would immediately donate it.

My old company gave us a gift certificate for like $25 at a grocery store and I always spent it on turkey or sides. I was thoroughly happy with that every holiday season.

An old employer used to do this, until the final year I worked there and the turkey I got was green inside. 🤮

Many years ago, I worked for a company that gave out turkeys. People were way happier when they just switch to grocery store gift cards for the price of a turkey (literally). So if a 20lb turkey was $30.70 that you got $30.70.

I’m with the other folks who say give gift cards or just cash. They may already have a turkey, maybe they don’t like turkey, so many things. Plus depending on the number of people you’ll need a BIG freezer lol

I appreciate everyone’s response. This is a great group. Thank you very much. You all gave me a lot to consider. I like the gift card solution.

A gift card is taxable income to an employee, a turkey is not.

You could send a prepared turkey via GoldBelly. We used this a few years ago when we visited relatives who were super busy and we wanted to minimize work for them from hosting us
