One year sober

In 2 and a half hours, I will be 365 days free of alcohol. I remember reading posts on here after many, many failed attempts and seeing people hit a year. I thought “I wonder what that feels like. I can’t wait until that’s me some day.” And here I am. I didn’t think I’d be as emotional as I was, but tonight on my way home, I listened to one of my favorite songs through this entire journey. Bird Set Free by Sia. I started sobbing on my drive home in disbelief that I’ve come this far. I’m not a millionaire, I’m not a workout guru, my problems didn’t all disappear after I quit for good. That was terrifying, because it meant I had to finally face shit head on. Quitting doesn’t fix your problems, but it gives you room to just start somewhere. In this last year, I’ve been going to a psychiatrist. I’ve been healing from past traumas that alcohol only kept ripping back open because the “fun” was facade. The fun times were the worst I’ve ever felt. I am still depressed, but I’m getting help and so much more. This last year wasn’t just quitting drinking, it was taking back my mental health and fighting like hell to be on my own side. I know someone out there is just starting out, and you may be reading this thinking “I wonder what that feels like. I can’t wait until that’s me some day.” I promise you, this fight is worth it. Every tear, every feeling of grief after coming to terms with your trauma, all of it. Because someone resilient is waiting for you on the other side when you get out of your own way. Someone who can start to see the color in things again is waiting for you patiently. #IWNDWYT

Thank you. It has been years of day ones, but this time feels different. I feel hopeful, I feel unburdened, I feel at peace with this decision. I'm leaving the disillusion that alcohol helps dull pain, trauma and regret behind, and I'm not feeding my childhood demons any more alcohol.

40 days is awesome!! I had years of day 1s too and there is real traction on "this time feels different". You hear it here often and it's true that it keeps getting better. 👍 IWNDWYT

I’m so proud of you. I know we are anonymous strangers but I really am so very proud of you. The fact that it’s everywhere, literally everywhere and we are doing this despite all of it, is incredible. Be proud of yourself!! That’s no easy feat.

Thank you for that! It means a great deal to me. Yes it is a ridiculous battle and we are winning it. The thought of having a drink actually makes me feel a little nausea so I am finding it easy to avoid. I keep reminding myself of how much better I feel without and how awful I felt when I did drink.

2
Mbg140897OP•

Yes, keep reminding yourself! I do that too with my mental state and just all over how I feel the next day! I definitely want to keep fighting the good fight!

"Taking back my mental health and fighting like hell to be on my own side"

What a great way to put it. Bigger picture it is so much more than being sober, it's living life in truth, it's not running and numbing from pain but facing it head on,

2
Mbg140897OP•

Thank you, I appreciate those kind words. Truly I do! I’m on medication now as well and not drinking anymore has truly lifted my spirits despite how hard life can be. I appreciate you and hope you have a great day today.
