Is my dog hunting my bird?
Hi, my partner and I are first time owners of birds (and got a parakeet). He’s really cute, chirps frequently, and flies around a bit, so we think he’s enjoying it.
But to the real question, we also have a dog (in fact my partners service dog); she’s well behaved and stops chasing squirrels when we tell her to - so she definitely has a prey drive, but is obedient.
We’ve been slowly introducing them to each other, her on short leash and him on our fingers. She’s sniffed him before and he tapped her, so they seem to be getting along.
Of course seem can always be off, and so we’ve been trying to study her behavior and she if she’s in “hunt” mode. I’ve attached a video of her staring at him and then trying to eat a few seeds (she like them funnily enough). We don’t think she’s hunting and is just confused, she’s extremely smart for a dog. Advice is greatly appreciated!
