I saw this person who draws amazing Moomin fanart and I noticed that they made a comic/story titled the young gardener. I saw Joxter, Mymble, and Snufkin in the comic then I saw other original characters that they said were inspired by Moomin characters. Is it like an AU that has some original characters or...?

I actually think it's a whole other work entirely, where some characters are loosely based on Joxter, Mymble and Snufkin - at least, that's what I understood
me too, but I'm still kinda confused
Basically, if you scroll through the artist's tumblr, you see that they draw a lot of those characters - so much, in fact, that they've sort of adopted them as their own original characters. Sure, it's very loosely based on existing characters, but they're different enough that it's its own thing now :)
Total fanfiction. As a rule, unless you can find © MOOMIN CHARACTERS OY mentioned somewhere in their work, it will be an unofficial product.
