Did they move the colgate clock further south since then?
Yeah they moved it down to that lot that’s now the park
Yeah, it was on top of one of the buildings so the lowered it to ground first then later moved it to the south end of this photo.
I was so confused at first because I didn't see the canal and was thinking they dredged it. Nope just moved the clock.
And I just found out the Morris Canal ran all the way across the state to Phillipsburg. https://canalsocietynj.org/canal-history/morris-canal/
Yeah NJ used to have a pretty big canal system. If I’m not mistaken, part of the Newark Light Rail runs through what was the Morris Canal by NJIT.

This is so cool, thank you!
Nice find!
Great picture. From shortly after they razed Colgate.
You can see Captain Al's Harbor Casino on Warren Street. Bet there was some on-duty cops getting their drink on in there.
I just do remember that place. We moved to Paulus Hook in 2002 and it was still there then.
I remember the last night at that place
Any stories to share?
I remember sitting on a picnic table outside and people being really sad. Someone said "JC will never be the same" and they weren't wrong (not just because of the closure of this place though.) We used to go to that place after work. It had a u shaped bar. Sadly no wild stories cause I was always beat when I got there from tending bar myself.
Oh I do have a story. It's about one of the last nights that it was open. There was this one time that a client after closing time, I worked at the Marina in a restaurant/bar barge that is no longer there, took us in his dinghy over the canal to go to the bar (if not we had to go the loooong way around via the park and that rickety bridge that used to be there.) Someone had to hold the flash light to signal. Those were the days of our younger lives!
I miss this jersey city. People were friendlier.
yo i see Colgate clock
LOOK AT ALL THAT PARKING!
there were colonies of brown furry field rabbits living on those lots.
Before Brooklyn moved in and ruined everything
Hey, I can see my house from here!
Same but I don’t see ShopRite so I wonder when that was built.
It’s a shame all those old Colgate buildings were torn down, some of them with the arched windows were really beautiful.
The only remaining Colgate building is 95 Greene. Honshu is in that building.
I didn’t know that, thank you for sharing. This is probably one of my favorite JC photos.

Credit to Andy Blair, he has a lot of great photos of JC on his Flickr account

That's a good one! Andy Blair has some great old JC photos
I posted this a while back: https://www.reddit.com/gallery/mz1e6e
when it was still abandoned, you could walk by after a rain and smell this vivid old-lady-soap smell from the broken windows in the basement. not sure which colgate brand was stored down there but it was super grandma-nostalgia.
There used to be a railroad loading dock at street level in front of 95. And there was a sky bridge connecting the second or third floor to the building directly across Greene.
30 Montgomery office building is still there too!
Ok! Didn't realize that was also a Colgate building. Thx
Shop Rite and the rest of Metro Plaza were built in 1993 according to the developer’s website.
I was surprised to learn that because that store feels much older to me.
I moved here in 2004 and that ShopRite felt ancient to me even back then. I would have guessed that store was built in the late 70s.
I wonder how many people that live in VYV know that there used to be a Pep Boys on that lot.
Where did you people come from? Beverly Hills? 🤦
I take it you weren’t around in the 70s.
Sorta crazy that those buildings are already outdated at 20 years old. Shows how fast JC has changed.
Like a third world country?
Shop Rite used to be on Christoper Columbus.
Christopher Columbus used to be called Railroad Ave.
