Why are we trying to use legislation to disciple people?

I am a conservative Christian. I lean into the Bible to understand right from wrong, how we should relate to other people and most importantly, how Jesus handled issues, created relationships and tried to guide people toward the will of His Father. He also avoided directly engaging in politics and using the government as a means to deliver or enforce his messaging.

Why are "Christians" not following the same path? Why are we not loving immigrants? Widows (Single mothers)? orphans? the under-served? the minorities? the less fortunate? Why are we fighting to impose our will via legislation rather than trying to help people find the better way?

This is just causing a backlash and shifting the discussions from the social issues to "those puritans who would have us all live their way". As Christians, we're not winning anyone over this way.
