The Climb

Poem

Staggered impulse propels the mind,

A motivation none can find,

To grasp and claw, to reach at last,

The trapdoor riddled mountain pass.

Mirages of the things you fear,

Distract you and then draw you near,

As shadows lurch forth from the caves,

To play the part of sanguine knaves.

The ideals you have always sought,

Will poison every stirring thought,

Your hands will slip from once firm holds,

As cracks reveal the doom untold.

And on your spiral down the cliff,

You gaze upon the precipice,

Where aspirations once seemed real,

Before the Doubt consumed your zeal.

Yet lying on this shameful base,

A smile rifts upon your face,

You’ve been here many times before,

And found the will to climb once more.

You stare down from what once you thought,

Was where you would resign to rot,

And realize that this daunting slope,

Allows us to conceive of hope.
