Implement byte addressable RAM?

I am designing a 16-bit processor that will have an address width of 32 bits. I want to make the memory byte addressable and be able to read 1 or 2 bytes based on a control line coming out of the processor. If reading 2 bytes, they have to be aligned in memory to and even address (cant read both $1011 and 1012 at the same time for example). How do I go about implementing this?
