5800x3D or 13600K

Build Help

Thinking of getting a new motherboard + CPU since I am upgrading from Coffee Lake. I want to stay DDR4 for a while due to DDR5 prices and waiting for their much better performance/price in the future. I also have 3200 MHz CL16 DDR4 RAM I can reuse to save money.

What does this reddit suggest for a long term DDR4 setup? 5800x3D or a 13600K, I will mainly be gaming and both CPUs will be good enough for the productivity I do (I know the 13600K is better at productivity). I cannot tell from the benchmarks which CPU is better with DDR4, they are all over the place, quite dependent on games, and inconsistent. My biggest concern is which CPU will age better in future (x3D's cache vs 13600k's speed) and if anyone here has a clearer idea of their performances (esp 1% lows) at DDR4.

Thanks.

A lot of the advantages from intel's 12th and 13th gen is really coming from ddr5. If you are sticking with ddr4, the x3d is solid. Although it depends heavily on what sort of games you play. Some aren't memory limited, in which case the 13600k is faster. Then there's things like stellaris or factorio which are just memory stress tests.

Yeah my biggest problem is the lack of consistency in the reviews since so many are bench-marking using DDR5 for 13th gen and I don't have the flood of DDR4 data like I would have for 12600k. For example, techspot/hub has the x3D being better than 13600K at DDR4 for most games: https://www.techspot.com/review/2555-intel-core-i5-13600k/

However, the few YT DDR4 comparisons between the two that do exist have the 13600K being better but their data is so different than techspot: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_UWRdmltn8Q&t=746s

That is the main crux of my indecision, I am leaning towards the x3D just because techspot/hub is one of the biggest well known reviewers vs random yters.

I trust techspot a lot more then I trust a random youtube channel that just happened to have the exact same ratio of performance between 3 cpus in every game, despite them all having wildly different advantages, and being very different in all the other reviews.

The biggest differences I've seen between the two are in games like Factorio or Microsoft Flightsim 2020. In those, the 5800X3D has a MASSIVE advantage. Else, the advantage will usually go to the 13600K.

I notice your tag, do you undervolt your cpu? I do with my gpu but usually leave CPU alone...but if I get these new gen intel CPUs I am thinking of the -85 mV undervolt that some people are saying is really effective. Your opinions?

I haven't YET but I plan to soon. My office gets REALLY hot when I'm gaming in certain games, so any reduction in power consumption I can get would be nice.

Can you share links of performance tests showing this MASSIVE advantage of the x3d in MSFS, I am genuinely curious as I was considering the 13600k. Everything I have seen shows the 13600k performing better or equal to x3d. Thanks

Sure thing. It's in the Tomshardware's 13900K Review.

Quote for Flightsim:

L3 cache obviously reigns supreme here as the Ryzen 7 5800X3D is an incredible 20% faster than the Core i9-13900K. Here we see some odd performance trends with Ryzen 7000 processors once again, with the Ryzen 9 7900X inexplicably trailing the other chips regardless of how many times we retested. This suggests some game code tuning could be in order.
