Why does texting suck so badly on the Xbox?

On PS4, you can text on the phone quickly without problems. One the Xbox One, it opens a text window that freezes the game and crashes my session about 50% of the time. Has it always been this bad? I have only been playing on the Xbox One for 2 months.
