all that was left of me - the fall of Icarus
swollen plumes of smoke
suffocating
consuming
a wilted Icarus
pale wings engulfed in soot
writhing, scrambling
against forged iron chains
once feather-light, now
falling
falling
falling
straining for an anchor
clutching onto his last gasps
like a candlewick
trying to sustain the flame.
he whispers a hymn
don’t let go.
don’t let it burn out.
loosening
the grasp of melting hands,
wallowing on the precipice
of a sinister dusk
plunging, no abandon.
with silent pleas, dripping
like liquid wax
from blind eyes,
hidden amongst the clouded swells
in the waves that swept up and under
licking their paws
howling down a horned abyss
succumbing, resistant.
defying, obedient.
completely
entirely
helpless
