Poem

Amazing grace

Blankets the vigil

Where I quietly panic

I don't know the rules of shared grief

My burdened breaths feel too selfish here

how sweet the sound

Of remembrance

The silence of thousands

Hovering above bowed heads

Tongues and tears dragged down by grief

that saved a wretch like me

Praise God for what I don't understand:

What makes a boy forget his humanity

What makes a nation numb to tragedy

What it feels like to lose a son

I once was lost

Bodies folded, hands clasped

Bring me back to the cold, dewy grass

Under silent stars and candlelight

Brothers mourn

And we bear witness

but now I'm found

It wasn't us, but it could have been

It could have been any of us

was blind

It could have been any of us

It shouldn't have been any of us but

It was D'Sean Perry

It was Devin Chandler

It was Lavel Davis Jr.

but now I see

"The one thing that gives me comfort

Is I know each one of them had somebody in our class

Trying to help them.

I want their families to know that,

In their last moments,

They weren't alone."
