New to Pern, just wanted to gush a bit
Started listening to readings of the Pern books at work. I've listened to Dragonflight, Dragonquest, The White Dragon, and Dragonsong. Despite being the lightest on dragons, Dragonsong has possibly been my favourite story!
I really enjoyed the way Menolly was almost discovered to be Petiron's elusive apprentice several times before the end, it's a good narrative tease that had me figuratively pulling my hair wanting someone to figure it out. It made the ending feel the most satisfying out of the four stories I've listened to so far, it was cathartic to hit that point where Robinton finally figures it out.
The other three are brilliant too though. I love hearing the descriptions of the modern/future tech they find and guessing at what it is before it becomes more obvious. A lot of fantasy stories nowadays have some kind of advanced ancient civilisation (I notice it a lot esp in video games) but Pern really stands out in how it handles that aspect. I like that the stuff being discovered is things like microscopes and telescopes, rather than something like robots or laser cannons.
It's a small point to make, but I think Anne really nails the last line in each book too. No unnecessary epilogue stuff, just a really impactful line to cap off the ending that satisfies and also leaves you filled with the possibilites of world she's created.
I was worried that magic fire-breathing flying telepathic soul-bonding teleporting dragons with mood-gems for eyes, who can also time travel, would be too ridiculous for me to get down with. But they're just ridiculously awesome!
