WTW for columns and rows in a grid / table?

unknown

A row is horizontal and a column is vertical - but what are they? Groups? Lines? Collections?

What do you call a series of cells oriented in a particular direction?

Array

Too broad - there exist arrays that are not rows or columns. I’m talking specifically about a list of values taken side-to-side either horizontally or vertically, a subset of a bigger 2D table of values

Set

You can have a set that isn’t composed of only values down one axis of the graph though right?

Like in a 3x3 grid, ‘A1-A3’ would be the leftmost column, it would be a set of three values - but ‘A1, A2, B1, B2’ would also be a set, even though it is neither column nor row.

Rows and columns are essentially one dimensional, ordered collections, subsets of a parent 2D array, composed of a single vertical or horizontal slice.

… maybe ‘slice’ would work for me? Slices are subsets, and they’re generally understood to be ‘straight’ cuts out of a larger whole - do columns and rows have a diagonal sibling? 🤔

Vectors. Dimensions.

Vector is the one if you ask me. Row vectors and column vectors are common linear algebra concepts for a matrix.

I'm not super pleased with that answer. If you pull out any individual column or row you get a vector, but it doesn't fit if we were looking for something that says "columns and rows are two types of vectors"

In a spreadsheet it would be called a cell range or just a range. In mathematics it would be called a sequence (or perhaps a set, but in a sequence the same element can appear multiple times.) In computing it would be called an array

You could apply qualifiers like 1-dimensional, vertical or horizontal to any of the above if you need that specificity.

No, those things have rows and columns - but what type of thing is a row and a column?

Cell?

2
dootdootplotOP•

No, a row or column is a collection of cells.

lattice, for cells in 3D space

1
dootdootplotOP•

Oh that’s interesting - could a row or a column be a single dimensional lattice then?

1

that could be a matrix

2
dootdootplotOP•

Matrices are close too - they don’t come with the same assumption that their data spans an entire dimension of a larger matrix though. If a table is 13 rows tall, a single column must have 13 cells. A matrix could be 1x13, it could be 6x6, it could be any 2D collection basically. (Right?)

Like matrix does describe a collection of rows or columns, but it’s also broader than that - how would you characterize the specific type of matrix that is a row or rows. 🤔

I think so. Can use tensor for higher representation.

array for row, matrix for rows.

Length or run is what I usually hear. I think set, order, and array all could work as well.

Nah a row isn’t a measurement of something, it’s a segment, it’s a subset. It’s a collection of entries that spans a single dimension of a 2D collection.

And you’ve got the other ones backwards - rows and columns are something that charts and graphs and diagrams have, not what they are.

Sub-Matrix, Sub-Space. E.g. A 2D slice of a 3D matrix does not span the full dimensional space of the original matrix.

I would call it a line!

Divisions or sections

What do you call a series of cells oriented in a particular direction?

Depending on the direction, either a row or a column.

1
takatori•

I call them columns and rows.

What scenario are you imagining or nuance you want to express where any other distinction is needed?

1
Lucary_L•

Honestly, I would just call it grid or table/spreadsheet

The group is a matrix, more than one are matrices, and a series of cells is an array.
