A Poem to My Friend.

Poem

You were there always. As a child, you were right next to me. When I needed money, it was there. When I needed honey, it was there. The people who inspired me and never put me down, they all share your warmth. Out of all the things my consciousness creates, it always feel a little bit too unique to claim that you're me too. Thank you friend. What a journey we've lived together! You've always tried to please me. I am forever grateful for your presence. I see no shame and only happiness and peace for us in the future. I look forward to these days my friend. They are inevitable as we are to exist forever.

I think the message is solid but this feels like it could be a letter to anyone, which goes against the purpose of pieces like this. Of course, all poems allow you to see yourself in them. But being specific about the traits and characteristics that this person has that affects you makes it more engaging and ironically more related about.

Correct me if I’m wrong, and please don’t take offense, but based on this I would say English isn’t your first language?

I think there are a few things I struggle with this poem. I think that it would benefit from line breaks. “You were there/ always. As a child” really does have impact. I think the un-ordered rhyming is tough to pull off, money and honey rhyme comes off as callow (childish) without out any sense of irony. Finally, I just don’t think there are any particularly compelling images, certainly there are strong sentiments and heartwarming platitudes…but where is the piece of the poem I can feel/see/taste/hear?

All-in-all, I think this is a great sketch for what you want a poem to say, but I think you need to do some serious reworking. DM me if you do, I’d be happy to read it again.

Hello readers, welcome to OCpoetry. This subreddit is a writing workshop community -- a place where poets of all skill levels can share, enjoy, and talk about each other's poetry. Every person who's shared, including the OP above, has given some feedback (those are the links in the post) and hopes to receive some in return (from you, the readers).

If you really enjoyed this poem and just want to drop a quick comment, to show some appreciation or give kudos, things like "great job!" or "made me cry", or "loved it" or "so relateable", please do. Everyone loves a compliment. Thanks for taking the time to read and enjoy.

If you want to share your own poem, you'll need to give this writer some detailed feedback. Good feedback explains from your point of view what it was like to read the poem, and then tries to explain how the poem made you feel like that. If you're not sure what that means, check out our feedback guide, or look through the comment sections of any other post here, or click the links to the author's feedback above. I like the that it feels intimate, like a letter to a dear friend, a former lover, someone with you without being with you.

Critically, all I can add is that it could be structured a bit better. But really, who cares so long as the message is delivered and felt on the other end.

Enjoyed it.

Hi there.

I would say they are actually with me, I've seen all the evidence :) Definitely intimate.

Protector, friend, more than I can express through the construct of "human" existence. Always looking after me, always wanting to please me... always tucking me in at night ;)

I will work on the structure, first in a while.

I truly enjoy how personal and raw this poem feels. The way you describe why you’re grateful for your friend, puts me into your perspective and allows me to feel how you feel.

I enjoyed the poem, but it's hard for me to relate as I don't have close friends.

That being said, it made me more sad than anything.

Not your fault, though.

Don't be sad :) Love you!
