These Are Old Bones

Poem

These Are Old Bones

and I am merely a passing occupant. Angels ain’t just flashing lights and fragmented halos, they’re blistering wildfires and forest green eyes, syrup so sweet that the taste of sugar never leaves your open mouth.

I am never going to forget you. I can pretend and pretend but you’re still gone.

The air smells like smoke, other boys are boring but you are a burning house I want to live in. It’s raining and you are starting to forget about me.

I sleep, I sleep, I wake up, I dream. I have a little green kitchen. A hand built table covered in writing and a closet full of warm clothes. Daddy comes to visit. I ask him not to leave. I pour a drink. I watch him leave.

Which one of your lives is this? Is this one worth living? Is the golden Aurelia of the sun enough to make you stay? What does it matter if we are guilty? There is no god left to judge us.

There was a time I thought I’d know you forever.

I enjoyed this. It felt like I was reading your private journal. The imagery and use of language is also very creative. Great job! Keep writing!

Hello readers, welcome to OCpoetry. This subreddit is a writing workshop community -- a place where poets of all skill levels can share, enjoy, and talk about each other's poetry. Every person who's shared, including the OP above, has given some feedback (those are the links in the post) and hopes to receive some in return (from you, the readers).

If you really enjoyed this poem and just want to drop a quick comment, to show some appreciation or give kudos, things like "great job!" or "made me cry", or "loved it" or "so relateable", please do. Everyone loves a compliment. Thanks for taking the time to read and enjoy.

If you want to share your own poem, you'll need to give this writer some detailed feedback. Good feedback explains from your point of view what it was like to read the poem, and then tries to explain how the poem made you feel like that. If you're not sure what that means, check out our feedback guide, or look through the comment sections of any other post here, or click the links to the author's feedback above. If you're not sure whether your comments are feedback, or you have any other questions, please send us a modmail.

Hey, can totally relate to this. It has a good narrative flow that pulls the reader into the emotion of the questions. My main critique, the repetition of pretend detracts from your flow and could be replaced with another world or just a smoother transition.

Something along the lines of "I can pretend but in the end-" could work. Either way it's very expressive, thank you for sharing!

Images are very vivid and very real and concrete, good job on that. I especially liked the one with the green kitchen and the father, very well written.
That being said, the poem is disjointed a lot of random (or they at least appear to be) images strung in a thread that, while beautiful, doesn't let the reader understand what exactly this poem is about.
You need to tighten it up, get a clearer look at what you are trying to say, use the same creative and beautiful language but make a coherent story from it.
Also, you need to format it, because right now it reads more like prose than a poem, and it makes it even harder to get at what you're trying to say.

I give you 7.5/10

Good job, keep it up!

Pain and pleasure are not mutually exclusive, and you navigate that very well, and your longing is so colored by this reference of suffering that is missed among everything else, all the same.

Your description of Angels is simply beautiful and entrancing! It's so vivid and relate to more than one sense so hats off. My favorite part tho is the imagery of the falling rain and burning house. I love the significance it alludes to. I don't know if you mean to explain it with "you start to forget about me" but I think some imageries work better when they speak for themselves implicitly!

I think it’s good. Suffers from the same pitfalls all young or new writers have to navigate like being precious about the vocabulary or adjectives that feel like filler. But it’s a lovely poem with a powerful sentiment about the longing, the passage of time, love, heartache. It conveys a lot and so it works for me.

Don’t ever stop writing.
