Good thing we removed all those train lines so cars can be sleeping

in the mid nineties I worked for a environmental company that was in charge of cleaning up the terminal a few months after it's closure. we were knee deep in decomposing fish and maggots, we also discovered the remains of a few human bodies.

FYI, the NJ Turnpike Authority is discussing demolishing this building to widen the shoulder of their offramp approaching the Holland Tunnel, as part of turnpiketrap.org 💀💀

No they aren’t. The first merge down to existing lanes is supposed to be right before it.

https://turnpiketrap.org/opra-findings, "Appendix G - Alternatives Considered":

The most direct alignment would require the acquisition of the Cold Storage facility, most likely in its entirety, along with substantial private right-of-way.

"Cold Storage facility" is the building pictured here.

From the Columbus Drive Exit to Jersey Avenue, replacing the viaduct structure to maintain the current configuration of two lanes in each direction but providing standard shoulders

(emphasis mine)

The NJTA viaduct goes right up against this building, with no shoulder (Street View). The understanding of everyone I've talked to, including JC officials who are following this (and the NJTA's own words above), is that adding shoulders likely involves demolishing this building (in addition to many others up and down the corridor, if NJTA gets its way).

robhisme on twitter has been doing a lot of the OPRA'ing, and says he's happy to discuss this more there, but is not on reddit.

"Let's demolish a local landmark so we can build an extra lane of traffic, just for them to get stuck at the same traffic light at the end of the ramp"

The obvious caveat is that’s not the preferred option. It’s an option.

You’re once again intentionally misleading people.

I said "the NJ Turnpike Authority is discussing…". I am relaying info from the people I know who are following this issue most closely.

You seem very confident they are not considering this…?

At some point in the future people will look back at photos showing how much public space we give up for cars and wonder what on earth we were thinking.

Flanking the Terminus of U.S. Route 1 & 9, NJ Route 139, and the Newark Bay-Hudson County Extension of the New Jersey Turnpike, all at the Holland Tunnel in Jersey City/Hoboken. It is situated just to the south of the Roadways. I think Colden Street is on it's west side.
