Breakup poem (maybe nsfw?)
Hey guys - I'm not an experienced poet, but have been writing a lot to work through a confusing breakup, and wanted to share in case it's relatable for anyone. Sort of a free-form piece.
I said I can’t get enough of you—
I’d inject you into my veins if I could.
I said I wanted to trade bodies
so you could feel yourself inside of me.
I said I wanted to shrink down,
live in your chest hair, be carried around.
I said I wanted to travel back
to visit you along your past.
I loved you before I met you,
before I was even born.
And I loved the stories that you told me;
more so, the ones I told myself
about how we were meant to be
just like ‘invisible string’.
More like notes app poetry.
Was I ever what you were to me
or something else that you could leave?
You don’t know you don’t know you’re sorry you still don’t know
You say you don't know how you lost the connection
while you hold me and cry I can feel your erection.
Right there are the feelings you try to deny
and struggle to identify.
I don’t know what’s right anymore
you don’t know what you’re looking for.
You can’t eat or sleep or get out of bed
but you’re the one who made it.
Your body knows it was a mistake,
you said you knew you would regret it.
You promised you’d call when you figure it out
I said I won’t wait but it’s all I do now.
Was I the first to feel this way
or has this been your pattern?
Should I have known you’d leave one day?
Was I at least the one that mattered?
If I wanted you to hurt, I’d say,
“Maybe it’s like that movie—
somewhere in the multiverse
there’s another you and me
that gets 50 years and family.”
But I’m saving that line
until the right time;
until you're not already hurting in front of me.
Remember when you said it was a simulation
and meeting me made you sure.
We do still fuck on occasion
you don't come inside me anymore.
I’m meditating, micro-dosing,
trying everything I can.
You can’t articulate it, can’t move on
I don’t think you have a plan.
I still save the best songs for you
but I don’t think you’ll ever listen.
You’re so much older, why not wiser
why not braver, why not certain?
Maybe you’re not really done
said you need time to see what you want.
I’m trying hard to give you space—
respect your request or hack your attachment.
But if we both still cry every day
it's just mutual masochism.
Can your mom or sister please convince you
to try SSRI’s
or to apologize--
All I want is to forgive you.
