Respect Meruem, King of the Ants! (Hunter X Hunter) [Composite]
♫Unasked Advice/♫The Last Mission/♫Elegy of the Dynast
Meruem, known simply as The King for most of his life, was a Chimera Ant King, the ultimate offspring of a Chimera Ant Queen, an insect who passes on the genetic traits of species she eats to her progeny. The King’s role is to mate with other species and create the next generation of Queens and nests. Meruem’s Queen was a human sized mutant that ate thousands of people to give birth to Meruem, as well as Neferpitou, Shaiapouf, and Menthuthuyoupi, the Royal Guards that she hoped would allow him to conquer the world. Shortly before he was to be born, Meruem tore himself out of his mother’s womb and left her to die before even learning his name, while he and the Royal Guard looked for a place to start their own nest. They quickly took over the country of East Gorteau, planning to turn much of its population into Chimera Ants to serve as Meruem’s army. To pass the time, Meruem played with the country’s champions at various board games, beating all of them except one. To his frustration but also amusement, Meruem was unable to defeat a blind girl named Komugi at a game called gungi. This caused him to become torn between his instincts as an ant and his human compassion. Meruem’s dilemma was dramatically compounded when the Hunter Association attacked the royal palace. With Komugi injured, he asked Pitou to heal her, while Youpi and Pouf dealt with the other intruders, as he left for a deserted location to face Isaac Netero, chairman of the Hunter Association. Instead of fighting Netero, however, Meruem tried to have a dialogue with him, asking him to join him in remaking the world into a utopia. Netero declined Meruem’s offer, but was unable to get him to fight him, until he revealed he had learned what his mother had named him just before she died. Intrigued, the King engaged Netero, and using the experience from all his matches with Komugi, defeated him. However, Netero revealed he had come prepared to lose, activating a nuclear weapon right after telling Meruem his name, nearly killing him. Healed by Youpi and Pouf, Meruem now had amnesia, which Pouf, wanting to help his king in taking over the world, used as an opportunity to try and kill Komugi. Fortunately, she was protected by the hunters who had invaded the palace, and Meruem was able to remember her shortly after learning the nuclear weapon had poisoned him. Asking the hunters to let him see Komugi before he died, Meruem told her of his condition before they played game after game of gungi, until they finally passed away in each other’s arms

##Nen
Nen is a technique within Hunter X Hunter that grants users the ability to control their life energy, or aura, and use it to gain superhuman attributes. To harness Nen there are 4 general techniques which exist, and several advanced techniques, of which Meruem knows at least 2, as well as 6 categories of Nen user.
An explanation of each category, Meruem's type is Emission
###Ten
Ten allows a user to control the flow of their aura and lets a person protect themself with a defensive shield. It is the most basic of Nen techniques but also the most necessary, as it prevents one's aura from simply uncontrollably spilling out of their body.
###Zetsu
Zetsu is used to suppress one's aura, and by doing so can hide their presence and make it easier for them to detect the presence of others, as well as relieve fatigue, at the cost of being otherwise incapable of using aura
###Ren
Ren increases the flow of aura, amplifying the traits granted by Nen, improving users physical attributes and allowing them to expend more of their available aura
- Netero's Ren, which feels like being stabbed with needles to other Nen users, is much weaker than Pitou’s, let alone Meruem's ^- ^Chapter ^213, ^215
- Nen users weaker than Pitou can induce fear, paralysis, and eventually death in non-users with their Ren ^- ^Chapter ^47, ^361, ^199
- An output of Ren that was like a toddler's stomped foot compared to his full power scared Netero ^- ^Chapter ^290
- Spreads his Ren over hundreds of meters, filling several other Nen users with despair, and causing Youpi and Pouf to think he could defeat other Nen abilities with just the quantity of his aura [Anime] ^- ^Chapter ^304, ^308, ^Episode ^132
- His Ren caused another Nen user to prematurely age as if 100 years had passed [Anime] ^- ^Chapter ^312-313, ^Episode ^134
###Hatsu
Hatsu is a technique that varies from person to person, it is a personal expression of one's Nen, and for nearly every Nen user in the series, comes in the form of a signature ability
Meruem’s first Hatsu allows him to absorb the aura of other others by eating them, as well as any Hatsu they might have
- Eats 6/7ths of Pouf's body and over 90% of Youpi's and absorbs their aura and Hatsu’s ^- ^Chapter ^299, ^310, ^312
- Youpi’s Respect Thread
- Pouf’s Respect Thread
###Shapeshifting
- Grows wings like Youpi and Pouf's ^- ^Chapter ^301
###Rage Blast
Absorbed from Youpi, this Hatsu lets Meruem create explosions by compartmentalizing his anger
- Fires a blast of aura that destroys a plateau [Anime] ^- ^Chapter ^302, ^Episode ^129
- Aura is invisible to those without Nen unless it's Conjured ^- ^Chapter ^48, ^371
###In
In is an advanced application of Zetsu that makes aura undetectable to the senses without actually suppressing it
###Gyo
Gyo is the focusing of Ren in certain parts of the body, to either increase a user’s senses and detect aura hidden with In, or to improve their offensive or defensive power
- Could use Gyo before being taught anything about Nen ^- ^Chapter ^214, ^216
###En
En is an advanced application of Ten and Ren that extends a user’s aura to a radius of 2 meters around their body for at least 1 minute, allowing them to feel the shape and movement of anything that enters it
- Expands his En hundreds of meters at the speed of light ^- ^Chapter ^304, ^308
- Can read the emotions of those currently or previously exposed to his En and tell if they’re lying thanks to absorbing Pouf's Hatsu ^- ^Chapter ^312
- Another Nen user just getting near Pouf's En caused his hair to turn white from the stress ^- ^Chapter ^250-252, ^259
- Could tell with his En that Ikalgo previously told Welfin to act as a messenger for him ^- ^Chapter ^309, ^312-313
- Can use his En to Transmute his aura into countless photons, which he can scatter to attach to objects and read any data, from physical properties to emotions ^- ^Chapter ^314
- Can tell Palm knows he's poisoned with his En ^- ^Chapter ^314
###Shu
Shu is the enveloping of objects with aura to improve their strength and durability
###Ko
Ko is a combination of Ten, Zetsu, Ren, Hatsu, and Gyo, which focuses all of a user’s aura into one part of the body to make it far more destructive
###Ken
Ken is an advanced application of Ten and Ren to maintain the latter for longer, and envelop a user’s body with around 10 times more aura than normal
###Ryu
Ryu is the use of Gyo to quickly change the ratio of one’s offensive and defensive power in combat
