LITTLE BOY BLUE

Poem

Time is fleeting,

And we don’t get the luxury of setting its pace.

You can also be sure of this…

A ticking time bomb is never slow.

He was gift-wrapped in Baby Blue.

I’ve since hoarded every second

Stacked into piles, the years

Of big wheels and skateboards and beater cars,

Stitches and broken bones and dented fenders.

All boy, in rough and tumble

Shades of Black and Blue.

And I loved being the one he ran to for comfort.

Time kidnapped my little boy.

My heart, to this day,

Throbs a perfect ba-bump of

Bursting and breaking,

Pride and melancholy.

The trade was my little boy for a U.S. Sailor.

He proudly wears his uniform with

Broad shoulders and grit,

Upholding the Red, White and Blue,

On watch as my protector now.

He gave up his toys for ribbons and stripes,

Forfeited Easy Street for a road of burden,

A higher calling of caliber and stature,

Dressed in a mantle of deep Navy Blue.

Fair winds and following seas, my boy.
