Where to go between Thessaloniki and Athens

Hi there,

I got a bit over a week to get from Thessaloniki to Athens by car with my wife.

Which special, unknown, mythical places should we visit on our way?

So far I came only up with Meteora but I'm sure there are far greater places to visit. Everything except islands that are not reachable within an hour ferry ride and places around Athens are fair game.

Trying to plan out a route right now and we are leaving from Thessaloniki on Wednesday I think.

We have no problem staying somewhere for 1-2 days if it is worth it . Language is also not a problem and I'm trying to stay away from the tourist-y spots

Cheers and thanks in advance DA

Edit: fixing some iCorrection idiocy

Lake Plastiras, near the city of Karditsa and the mountain villages, at Pyli municipality.

Thermopyles are on your way....(the place where leonidas fought the persians with 300 men)....what else? Oh you should totally go to Pelion near Volos...! Google it! It's worth the trip! ;) tell me what you think :P

Good tip. Especially fakistra beach sounds like worth a visit. What else ?

The best bet is Mountain Pelion with beautiful villages and beaches.

Pelion is a sure thing by now. Googled about fakistra beach and will go there for a stop for sure

There is a road that surrounds the mountain. Drive all of it, and spend the night in the middle, in the village of Tsagkarada.

You could also try hiking on Olympus. Definitely one of the most beautiful and mythical mountains in Greece.

Been there done that. Thx for the tip though

I was hoping to do that on. My trip, but it was storming, and apparently you don't camp on Mt. Olympus while Zues is angry.

Don't skip Meteora, you'll regret it! Just go for one morning/afternoon after Lake Plastiras, it is fairly close.

Not intending to skip it. We gave more than a weeks time to visit everything

I'm not sure you can go wrong with Meteora (I went there on the way from Athens to Xanthi) of course there are a lot of other good ideas mentioned here.

Meteora are a bit of course but very well worth the detour! Do it!

Go to Agia Paraskevi at Tempi Valley, it has that unknown, mystical quality.

Sounds like a plan. Thx

Have you been to the Vergina archaeological museum? It has bee built on top of the dig site, and it's quite different than other museums

Eh. Just another small city . Nothing special really

One of the most recognised songs... "to treno fevgi stis octo.... Taxidi gia ti katerini..." that's probably it's only claim to fame. But it's got great beach bars like almira, or wet.

Been there :)

But I enjoyed the beachbars of chalkidiki every summer since I'm 16 . Time to explore something else :)

Up vote for FALILV reference but that's pretty much how I feel about Athens

just think of athens as a group of cities rather than one city. marousi has nothing to do with peristeri or the area around the centre. they dont really minle, their extended social circles are completely seperate, and they function autonomously; they just happen to be in the same geographical area. some of those "cities" are good, others shitty, others just plain horrible. mostly shitty. depends where you've been.

Just in case it isn't clear , I am Greek born here but lived most of my live abroad(china ATM). That being said I have a natural born and I have to admit unfounded aversion against everything Athens. Guess it comes with being born in thessaloniki ;)

i thought you said you were greek... not bulgarian :P
